How I become SAP Consultant- Rahul Prakash in careercenter

During my school days, when our home appliances used to go out of order and serviceman invited for repair, out of inquisitiveness I jump by his side to see what exactly he is doing inside the machine. Staring at me he must be thinking why I am disturbing him to perform his job. Those days the words like IC, diodes, transistors, resistors seems very fascinating.

In our place, the career path was fixed either become doctor or an engineer. Exactly following the trend, I joined one of the esteemed engineering college of India and graduated in ‘Metallurgy and Material Science’ specialization. No idea why I did engineering, no clue where I would end up doing job. Finally, I was placed in a manufacturing company in India and started working. Very happy that I have found a nice job, importantly salary and freedom to spend.

While working in shift operations, I had my first encounter with SAP, one day my boss asked me to order in SAP system few items like hand gloves and gas masks. Totally perplexed !! What is this SAP stuff? , How to do this? I had no idea, I took his help, and he told that on the desktop computer screen there is an Icon i.e. SAP logon pad. I just followed each and every steps of how to create a purchase requisition written on a separate notebook and clicked on button save. That was a nightmare to me. GOD, I did that! and after 2 days I received my indent items. That was the first time I realized the power of SAP ,  how fast a business transaction takes place.

Working for about couple of years still I had no clue why am I working there? My seniors suggested If you want to excel in career and earn handsome go for MBA.  I did MBA in Marketing and IT , while pursuing the program we underwent course on basic awareness in SAP. Many of us were unaware - Is SAP a word , company or something else? In that due course of time I started reading about ‘SAP’ and got infatuated with SAP terminology.

The placement season has begun and my batchmates were started getting job offers, going out of league I thought why not to make a career in SAP. Year 2008 was tough for placements and for job seekers, since recession had badly hit the market. IT companies were cancelling campuses visits, although I managed to sit in couple of companies but was rejected, reason was I  had no previous IT experience. At that time looking for SAP job without having relevant background was a distant dream. Time passes by and I kept trying finding a job in IT, Alas!! Only thing I received was rejection.

Wherever I appeared for interview the HR person have one similar question to ask – Do you have SAP background? I said no I do not have, then I am sorry, there is no opportunity for you. Is it not an Irony that until someone doesn’t get a chance to work, how he/she will get an experience!!
The more I was rejected the more I got determined to find a SAP job. I used to get motivation in the quote by Vince Lombardi- Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later the man who wins, is the man who thinks he can.”

MBA degree got over and my education loan EMI was started. I was jobless for an year. Everywhere only rejections even I tried for 10K (Indian Rupees) per month job.

One day I got an offer for Assistant manger- Sales position from one of the largest Indian steel company. Finally, the good time has returned – what next? Still I wasn’t happy as I didn’t landed where I wanted to be. The only satisfaction that I had was working as SAP end user. But unaware which module I am using? After settling down in my job , I started building my sales and marketing skills and understanding the entire end to end business process i.e. order to cash.  Off late I realized that as an end user I am working on SAP SD module and that paved the way for me to find a job in SAP SD.

While at work  I was also exploring possibilities how to get into the SAP SD. Having Sales and operation domain, I got an interview call from one of the big consulting company. Interview was scheduled and I was totally unaware about the SAP SD questions !!

In the interview there were many questions asked from customizations and pricing/OTC concepts. I failed miserably since as an end user I had only seen SAP screen and few reports for example  transactions like order creation (VA01), Customer Account Line Item Display (FBL5N), Customer Master data etc. and No idea how this SAP stuff works behind the screen

In couple of months I faced 3 interviews – but failed there too. Finally at my last interview I dared to ask from interviewer about my feedback – He said you have good domain experience but no SAP experience except as an end user.  May I suggest!! why don’t you go for SAP SD certification from one of the SAP authorized training center. Probably after certification, you will have fair chance of qualifying interviews.

The very next day I went to the training center , I enquired about the course and the fees was approx. 3.5 lakhs (Indian rupees).  Oh My God!! I have EMI running for education loan and now this 3.5 Lakhs, where should I go. I approached bank it was very difficult to get loan due to my existing loan and on top of that bank’s high interest rates.

I was clearly looking at my destination but how to overcome the hurdle of arranging money. Come what may, I will go for certification – somehow I arranged money with family and friends?

I joined the course and started romancing with the classroom environment during the entire course duration. Now I was equipped with SAP knowledge and clearly able to correlate my domain experience with the SAP SD concepts. This day it’s curtain how this SAP stuff works behind the screen. On final day of the exam, Just before clicking submit button. I closed my eyes and said If I love it I will get it. I pressed the button; hurray, I passed the exam with excellence.
I can’t express that moment I have had experienced – big big relief that one hurdle is over.  Within a month I got my first call and I cleared the interview in one largest Indian IT company.  After Interview, while coming out of the company’s sprawling campus I looked back at the Gate- I said YES I HAVE DONE IT. YES  I HAVE CROSSED THE GATE.  The all credit goes to SAP certification program and the value it holds in the corporate SAP world.

I can proudly say that SAP certification program has given me a launch pad to start my career in SAP. Now I am a SAP SD consultant working in projects to support our customer realizing their business benefits using SAP.

The people who wish to pursue carrier in SAP may surely take an advantage of SAP certification program. Before that, one should ask from within that am I really wanting to do this, or just like that because it has good career option providing white color job and handsome salary / foreign trips.
Globalization , cultural diversity and vast knowledge sharing platforms  has brought ample opportunities in every walks of life , one can now make career in any field provided where one wish to be.
Live your dreams and keeping trying some day you ought to make it true.

Why Domain Experience is must to be a SAP Functional consultant?- By Palaji Pareswar

Now days I am observing that more & more youths are turning towards SAP as a career. With the help of my experience & knowledge if I decode this trend, I can figure out following reasons:

  • Glamour & Buzz around SAP Career
  • Money & Perks involved in SAP jobs
  • One of the way to enter into IT from your domain(sales, production)
  • Job opportunities availability

This trend can be well understood with the given reasons.

However I am observing that today’s youths are trying to enter into SAP career by keeping aside mandatory prerequisite. For the sake of entry into SAP, they are adopting shortcuts. However to be successful in your SAP career, if you possess all theprerequisites, it would be in your favor & there are more chances of winning the game.

According to my beliefs & understanding, I will say following are the prerequisite to be a junior or entry level SAP functional consultant:

1) Graduation Degree(Post-Graduation in Business Management like MBA is preferred)
2) Domain (functional) Experience of 3 years.
3) End user/core team experience of any ERP – Preferred
4) SAP Certification (Not mandatory but preferred)

Today I will talk here about importance of domain experience & why I am quoting it as a must factor? I will simplify my reasoning through 5 bullet points so it would be easy to understand for each of us.

1) Always remember, you are in consulting - Just refer the dictionary & try to find out meaning of word “consulting”. According to Dictionary.com, consulting means employed or involved in giving professional advice to the public or to those practicing the profession.Meaning is very simple.  For consulting you need solid experience. Consulting is an art or science which requires extensive knowledge & wisdom which can be earned through genuine experience only. There is no alternative to that.

2Knowledge of enterprise resources – My friends you are planning a career in SAP which is an ERP which simply means Enterprise Resource Planning. And if you do not know what are the resources required to run a enterprisethen how you are going to plan it? Very
basic question. Planning enterprise resources i.e. man, material, machines, money cannot be done by just reading any book. You need actual domain experience to do it swiftly & efficiently.

3) Business Process Expertise – What is the role of a SAP functional consultant in a project? Very simple answer to this question is incorporating all existing business process of enterprise into SAP ERP so that firm could transact on day to day basis in a very disciplined & controlled manner to bring productivity & efficiency.  Without actual process knowledge this would be a very daunting task. If you are SD consultant you must know important process related to Sales & Distribution.

While speaking  with client, you have to speak in business language & not SAP language.

You will not get to know business language in any business school. For that you need real time experience. Business process knowledge will play very significant role while speaking with client. For example if you do not know ARE forms, how you will map export process in SAP & how you will answer customer queries?

4) Integration between different functions – After selling any goods or service, customer account will get debited & company revenue account will get credited. Its nothing but integration between Sales& Finance department. You will come to know this while working in an organization selling goods or services & collecting payment after that. At the time of follow up for payment you will learn credit management & payment term configuration in SAP SD which is integration.

5Suggesting Improvements – When you suggest improvements to your client, you have to be extra careful because you are pointing out something which is practiced by clients for years. You can suggest improvement only when you know the process thoroughly. You know pros & cons of the process. Again domain experience for this is inevitable.

Hence friends do not make rush, do not make any hasty decisions before entering into SAP career. Jobs will not run away. Jobs would be always there for right skilled candidate.  You can do following things to improve your business knowledge:

  1. Gain some meaningful domain experience.
  2. Understand the business process from its roots.
  3. Ask questions to seniors.
  4. Contribute to business decisions through your inputs.
  5. Learn from your bottom of your heart.
  6. Work hard & understand joints between different functions.
  7. Try to improve your existing processes with your business insights.

SAP world will welcome you with open arms. Then you will become the guy that SAP world needs. You can contribute to SAP eco-system with your knowledge & wisdom.
Please do write to me with your feedback & suggestions. All the very best & god bless all of you.

Getting into SAP - From the perspective of a prospective consultant- Posted By Terry Choo

Hello. I've recently completed a course in SAP BI and am studying for my SAP BI Certification.

Now, it seems starting out in SAP as a mid-career switch is not that easy, especially if you do not have 3 - 4 years of SAP experience already.

But being a lucrative career, it has attracted a lot of unsavoury SAP wannabe "consultants" who will do almost anything to get a job. You can read more about SAP Consulting fraud here.

Coming from the other side of the fence, I thought I'd share what really happens on the other side. (Yes, it's like storm-trooper training on the death star)

Everyone normally would want to move himself into a better place, and that is perfectly fine. Having more means you can better help others too. (I do it for God, what about you?)

Therefore after doing some research, one finds that SAP will lead to a good career. All's great, where do I sign up? Naturally, to be able to be a SAP consultant, one needs to know SAP, so one will do a course.

When researching SAP courses, there's the problem that the official SAP courses are VERY expensive. There are also other SAP courses that are not run by SAP.

When one joins one of those non-official SAP courses, the school mentions that all we need is the knowledge and the (SAP) world is our oyster.

What surprised me was that besides the usual people who have other IT background, or core business background like Finance, HR, Sales etc. are people who are not from business or IT backgrounds. Okay, nevermind, everybody gets a chance to improve their situation.

Going into class made me realise something else - there are people who are generally interested and there are those who paid good money, some even twice, but who simply refuse to participate in class. I have no idea why they take the course if they are not interested.

Then after the course ended, we were in what was supposed to be an "internship" but really, it was an instructor teaching about SAP project management and just implementing a simple configuration document (I dare not even call it a blueprint), and we were supposed to have completed "1 SAP Lifecycle using ASAP". Incidentally, I even found the so called "blueprint" on the internet so it can't have been a real company. The school even had a "CV design consultancy" which basically modified our CVs to put in some SAP experience, but mainly it's all the technical SAP jargon and nothing about the project (which is quite useless). However, I did learn a lot about what actually goes on in a project and about ASAP methodology which is good.

What I experienced in that class was generally a feeling of desperation. Everybody there was so desperate to get ahead fast that it seems morals were flung out of the window. One of the instructors told us to be "smart" when going for interviews, in other words, to fluff up our experience. We were taught what a 3 - 4 years experienced consultant could have learnt in just 8 weeks or so it seemed, so we were qualified as it was claimed.

Seems like nobody wants to do things the slow and right way anymore, to cut your teeth, learn on the job and grow as a person. I've come across people who stretch the truth to blatantly lying on their CVs and LinkedIn profiles. Friends, firstly, if your intention is to cheat and lie, how can you complain when you are having so much trouble getting a job? And secondly, why do you risk disgrace if you did get the job and was discovered later?

To BE a SAP consultant, you need to know the material inside out, and then go out and help people. If you are a carpenter, you need to know your woodwork and then build something for someone. If you are a doctor, you need to know the body, and then save lives. It is the same with SAP, know your product, and then solve a business problem. I would be terrified if my doctor had someone interviewed for him or had lied in his CV, wouldn't you?

I'm never going back to the school again. But it's not just about the school, it's about you too. If one compares things now with when it all began, now I know much more about SAP BI and where to traverse in the SAP world, which is infinitely better than a few months ago when I did not even have a clue where to start. SAP being so vast, now that I know more, I can learn more, which is GOOD. But watch your own intention, because it'll either lead you to your destination or your destruction.

For me, I'm going to do my certification and then see how that works out. Maybe with my experience in consultancy in business intelligence in my company, it'll take me somewhere. I've read Thomas' article here and it's true, most of my friends I know have gone through the path of starting in a consultancy or through working with a client company. However, lying and cheating will just bring you sleepless nights and having to keep making lies to maintain your cover, which is infinitely more difficult, is just plain wrong. And the internship? Well, it was a learning experience for me, on how to integrate with other core modules and how projects are managed, but it's not going in my CV as experience.

Have faith, people.

SAP E Learning Flexibility of SAP Eacademy

SAP E Learning

Most  SAP  courses I want to attend in my country are not guaranteed to be scheduled in my city due to insufficient attendees. Or, when scheduled, I am too busy on a project to take the time off to attend. Then there is also the unpredictable parts of life like illness. The times I have attended, I appreciated the trainers were considerate of work commitments by allowing time for us to check our emails and return phone calls. But in reality,

I would attend a day of training (which is mentally exhausting even for a gnat); use the lunch break to remote into work to investigate critical issues; and then work into the hours of the night to do my day job followed by a rinse and repeat for the rest of the course duration (typically 3-5 days). My opportunity to learn was lost as I attempted to juggle learning and work. Instead, I mastered being a caffeine-powered zombie on a sugar high.
The SAP E academy  offeres a Flexibility better than one that can help people serve  their interest to focus and learn better !
